Matt Urban Center Pilot Program Gives Green Jobs Training to Unemployed Workers

Today the Lt. Colonel Matt Urban Human Services Center of WNY (Matt Urban Center) celebrated the first graduates of a new program that provides in-demand job skills training in lead paint hazard control, home repair and renovation, and environmental and green demolition contracting to unemployed city residents.  Sundra Ryce, President and CEO of SLR Contracting & Service Company, Inc. delivered the commencement speech.

Funded by the Erie County Department of Health and the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo, the program is one of the first in the nation that braids public and private funds to train welfare-to-work program participants to make them eligible for jobs in lead hazard control, environmental contracting and green demolition.

  •     A familiar early photo of Buffalo shows the Twin Pumps that stood at Main Street and The Terrace near what was the entrance to Memorial Auditorium. The two pumps standing side by side, were operated manually by two slim, curved pump handles made of wrought iron, about 4 feet long, with a ball at the end of each handle about the size of a small orange. The pumps stood on a stone slab about 4 feet wide, 6 feet long and about 10 inches high. On each corner of the plot reserved for the pumps was a stout oaken post to fend off wagons that might be inclined to drive too close.

No Frackin' Wait--Watch 'Gasland' Immediately

As the hydrofracking moratorium in New York state comes to an end, Josh Fox's 2010 documentary Gasland is only growing more relevant. Barring overwhelming negative public response during the coming 60-day public comment period, hydrofracking will come to New York in a big way.

Desperate to solve the state's budget crisis, an influx of energy industry dollars is proving too tantalizing to pass up for most legislators. Unfortunately, it seems the process is inherently catastrophic to the environment, those living in the area, and most unnervingly the supply of potable water. A large portion of the Marcellus Shale system, the planned site of extensive drilling operations, underlies the Chesapeake Bay Watershed and the Delaware River Basin.

Congressmen Reed & Higgins Offer Amendment to Restore Funding for West Valley Clean-Up

WNY Members Say Investments Now Save In the Long-Term

U.S. Representatives Tom Reed (NY-29) and Brian Higgins (NY-27) have together introduced an amendment to increase funding designated for clean-up efforts at the West Valley site, a move aimed at protecting the greater Western New York community and saving money over the long-term.  The Reed-Higgins Amendment would restore $41 million to the non-defense environmental cleanup fund in H.R. 2354, the FY 2012 Energy and Water Appropriations Bill.

“Let us trust each other,” roared the Governor-general designate and added; “Let us judge by results, not by theories. With the help of every section –I see that every class is represented in this huge gathering –let us work in double shift if necessary to make the Sovereign State of Pakistan really happy, really united and really powerful.”
