Keep Warm and Keep Well During Cold Weather

Keep Warm and Keep Well During Cold Weather

A Message from Kenmore Mercy Hospital

As temperatures in Western New York drop to the single digits this week, physicians at Kenmore Mercy encourage people to stay safe.

People living with lung conditions are at particular risk for feeling the cold more. Michael S. Gough, MD, a pulmonologist at Kenmore Mercy Hospital said, “These cold snaps lead to an increase in wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath that can be frightening and sometimes even dangerous to individuals with respiratory diseases such as COPD or sever asthma.”

He offers suggestions to these individuals to avoid the worsening of their condition. Such tips are also good practice for otherwise healthy individuals.

˙   Only go outside if necessary and don’t stay out long

˙   Keep a stock of medications so you don’t have to go out during very cold weather

The Lake Erie Seiche Disaster of 1844

The Lake Erie Seiche Disaster of 1844

Tremendous Gale!  Awful Destruction of Lives and Property!

October 21 & 22, 1844  Buffalo Morning Express & The Commercial Advertiser

This flood (*Seiche) occurred October 18, 1844.  It was the most disastrous that has ever occurred since the city was founded. It came without warning, an avalanche of waters upon a sleeping community, many of whom were drowned and many of whom had narrow escapes from a similar fate.  For several days before the occurrence of the flood a strong north- east wind had been driving the water up the lake, but on the evening of the 18th a sudden shift of the wind took place, and it blew from the opposite direction with a tremendous force never before or since known to the inhabitants of Buffalo. It brought with it immense volumes of water in a tremendous wave, which overflowed the lower districts of the city and vicinity, demolishing scores of buildings, and spreading ruin along the harbor front, playing havoc with shipping, and causing an awful destruction of human life.

No Sign of Winter......

No Sign of Winter......

...only 24 inches of snow (so far) for the season in and around Buffalo looks and feels more like early spring than the swan song of our winter season. The ice-boom that was put in last December seems a moot point for this winter season.
