Primordial Strength to Offer Concussion Reduction Seminar to Area Athletes

Sports-related concussions have been all over the news lately, thanks in large part to some serious injuries that have occurred in recent NFL and NHL games.

From 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, December 11, Primordial Strength Inc. — a leader in neck and trapezius training and the anti-concussion movement — will conduct a Concussion Reduction Seminar through Neck and Trap Training at the Lancaster Elks Lodge, 33 Legion Parkway. The cost is $40, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the annual Trench Trophy award event. The trophy is presented annually to Western New York’s high school “Lineman of the Year.”

Trunk or Treat

The Matt Urban Center is sponsoring a one-of-a-kind Halloween event for kids in the Broadway-Fillmore neighborhood.  The event, Trunk-or-Treat, will provide a safe way for kids to trick-or-treat in this neighborhood.  It will be held on Friday, October 29 from 3-6pm on the driveway to the Central Terminal, at Memorial and Paderewski.

Children will trick or treat at people’s car trunks along the promenade of the Central Terminal.  Inside the Matt Urban Center HOPE Center at 385 Paderewski there will be food and games, and a costume contest will be held at 5pm on the front lawn of 385 Paderewski, with prizes for the best costume.

We are looking for volunteers to come and decorate the trunks of their cars (and themselves!) and hand out candy to the kids.  If you are interested, please contact Tara Murray at (716) 893-7222 ext 306.  There is a $5 donation requested.

Local Powerlifter is Training Other Athletes to Win

In his early teens, Steve Helmicki considered himself a bit of an undersized football player, which led him to begin training in his parents’ attic with a DP vinyl and sand weight set and a Bill Grant fitness manual. While countless other young athletes might have a similar story to tell, very few — if any — have ever taken it quite as far as Helmicki.

The Matt Urban Center's Urban Farm Is Up & Running

The Matt Urban Center's Anna Walentynowicz Apartments Tenants Association, at 185 Rother in East Buffalo, has been busy working on their urban agriculture farm project. This project is helping provide our East Buffalo residents with access to healthy foods. Our tenants are growing fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers. These items are being grown on raised beds in back of our building (lots are on Sycamore). The goal is to show our tenants how to grow their own healthy, safe and affordable food.
