Three Erie County Companies Receive ECIDA Funds

A Statement Released by the Erie County Executive’s Office and Travers Collins & Company

Buffalo, NY A trio of Erie County businesses have seen growth spurts courtesy of a new Erie County Industrial Development Agency (ECIDA) loan program which targets established companies that have difficulties obtaining traditional bank financing due to increasingly strict lending policies.

The Business Stimulus Loan Fund has provided more than $800,000 to three fast-growing Erie County firms since its establishment last fall, leading to expansion of their workforces and client rosters.

No Frackin' Wait--Watch 'Gasland' Immediately

As the hydrofracking moratorium in New York state comes to an end, Josh Fox's 2010 documentary Gasland is only growing more relevant. Barring overwhelming negative public response during the coming 60-day public comment period, hydrofracking will come to New York in a big way.

Desperate to solve the state's budget crisis, an influx of energy industry dollars is proving too tantalizing to pass up for most legislators. Unfortunately, it seems the process is inherently catastrophic to the environment, those living in the area, and most unnervingly the supply of potable water. A large portion of the Marcellus Shale system, the planned site of extensive drilling operations, underlies the Chesapeake Bay Watershed and the Delaware River Basin.

Congressman Higgins Pushes for Termination of National Flood Insurance Program

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) joined fellow House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee member Candice Miller (MI-10) in introducing an amendment to H.R. 1309, the Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2011, which would terminate the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

“The Flood Insurance Program is fundamentally flawed and economically broken,” said Higgins.  “In Western New York and other communities across the nation it levies a mandatory flood tax on homeowners who are at virtually no risk of flooding and see absolutely no benefit.  It hinders small business growth, negatively impacts property values and is driving up our national debt.  We need to lead with common sense and eliminate, rather than extend, this unfair program.”

WNY Members Say Investments Now Save In the Long-Term

U.S. Representatives Tom Reed (NY-29) and Brian Higgins (NY-27) have together introduced an amendment to increase funding designated for clean-up efforts at the West Valley site, a move aimed at protecting the greater Western New York community and saving money over the long-term.  The Reed-Higgins Amendment would restore $41 million to the non-defense environmental cleanup fund in H.R. 2354, the FY 2012 Energy and Water Appropriations Bill.

“Let us trust each other,” roared the Governor-general designate and added; “Let us judge by results, not by theories. With the help of every section –I see that every class is represented in this huge gathering –let us work in double shift if necessary to make the Sovereign State of Pakistan really happy, really united and really powerful.”
