May Dates Announced for Free Rabies Clinics in Erie County

ERIE COUNTY, NY— Today, Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz, Commissioner of Health Dr. Gale Burstein and Erie County Legislator Lynn Marinelli (District 3) announced that upcoming rabies clinics will be held in the month of May. The clinics, conducted by the County Department of Health in association with the Niagara Frontier Veterinary Society and the SPCA Serving Erie County, provide free rabies vaccinations for dogs, cats, and ferrets.

“We must protect families and their pets from rabies, and these free clinics are a great way to do that,” said Poloncarz.

Grisanti Proposes Law To Establish Central State Registry For Pet Abusers In NY

Grisanti Proposes Law To Establish Central State Registry For Pet Abusers In NY

Senator Mark Grisanti (R-60) today announced  the sponsorship of legislation (S6875) that would amend the agriculture and markets law to have the commissioner create an animal abuse central registry in New York State for anyone over the age of 18 who is convicted in a case of animal abuse.

The law would require abusers to register annually and prohibit animal abusers from possessing, adopting, owning, purchasing or exercising control over an animal as long as they are required to register.  Any animal abuser who intentionally or knowingly fails to comply with the registration requirements or provides false information will be guilty of a felony which is to be punishable by a imprisonment not to exceed four years or a fine not to exceed five thousand dollars or both.  Shelters and pet stores would also be required to check the registry when selling or adopting an animal.

Lancaster Church Sets Animal Blessing

Lancaster Church Sets Animal Blessing

The term “holy cow” could take on a whole new meaning Sunday.

Parishioners are invited to bring their dogs, cats, birds, rodents and any other domesticated pet to Faith United Methodist Church, 5505 Broadway, Lancaster, for a Blessing of the Animals Service at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2.  The event is a Christian tradition in honor of Francis of Assisi, the patron of animals.

Pastor Tom LeBeau will offer individual animal blessings in the parking lot, weather permitting.  Otherwise, blessings will be held in Fellowship Hall, located in the church’s basement.

Church officials ask that all animals be either in carriers or leashed to ensure the comfort and safety of all attendees.

There also will be a time in the service to remember animal friends who have died in the past year.  People are invited to bring pictures of those pets as well.

Animals and humans are invited to stay for refreshments after the service.
