Summer is passing by at a rapid pace, and before you know it moms and dads across Western New York will be heading out to purchase school supplies and new clothing for the upcoming 2014-15 school year. But have you given any thought to having your child’s vision tested before he or she heads back to the classroom?

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, children should receive an eye evaluation once before the age of 3 and every one to two years until the age of 19.

Catholic Charities WIC to Host Breastfeeding Walk, Healthy Baby Festival Aug. 8 in Erie County

Anyone in support of a healthy start for babies or who would like to learn more about breastfeeding – are urged to participate in Catholic Charities free Breastfeeding Walk and Healthy Baby Festival on Aug. 8 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Delaware Park at the entrance of Colvin Avenue and Amherst Street.  

Catholic Charities Women, Infants and Children (WIC) nutrition program, which serves all of Erie and Niagara counties, is hosting the event to raise awareness of the benefits and significance of breastfeeding. The walk, in celebration of World Breastfeeding Week taking place Aug. 1-7 in more than 170 countries worldwide, is also designed to create community support to friends, family and others who are or may be considering breastfeeding, or who have breastfed.

The popular Elmwood-Bidwell Farmers Market, featuring nearly 40 vendors selling fresh, seasonal and local produce and products, continues its 15th season on July 19. A program of the Elmwood Village Association, the market is held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays, rain or shine, through Nov. 29. 

Providing musical entertainment on July 19 (weather permitting) will be singer/guitarist Rob Falgiano from 9:30 to 11 a.m, followed by singer/guitarist Paul Arata from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A Wellness Lane, sponsored by the Wellness Institute of Greater Buffalo, will also take place on Saturday.

Providing musical entertainment on July 12 (weather permitting) will be singer/guitarist Don Z. from 9:30 to 11 a.m, followed by Birdie Cree from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Lexington Co-operative Market will occupy the community group table this Saturday.

Beginning Saturday, July 5, the Elmwood-Bidwell Farmers Market in Buffalo will serve as a pilot site for a new incentive program called Double Up For Bucks. This program has been arranged by the Field & Fork Network in order to provide the Western New York region with further access to fresh and healthy food.

With backyard parties, cookouts and fireworks, the July 4th holiday is a favorite time of year for many Americans. But the celebrating can turn deadly when people drive after drinking alcohol.  

“Impaired driving can turn celebrations into tragedy in an instant,” said Monica Farrar, director of The Resource Training Center Drinking Driver Program. “With July 4th approaching, we’re reminding people of the cost of impaired driving. In 2012, 179 people were killed in crashes over this holiday period. Of those deaths, 44 percent were in crashes that involved alcohol.
