Free Back-to-School Haircuts at Matt Urban Hope Center

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Nichole Londo, a hairstylist and former cosmetology instructor at Erie 1 BOCES, is volunteering her time to provide free back-to-school haircuts for area kids on Tuesday, August 31, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Matt Urban Hope Center, 385 Paderewski Drive, near the Central Terminal.

"This is my second free cut event at the center this summer," says Londo. "I really just want to help the children have a great look for school."

She is also collecting school supplies to donate to families who attend. "My goal is to raise at least 16 bookbags full of supplies to distribute the day of the event," she says.

Donations of school supplies for the book bags can be dropped off at Fantastic Sam's, 1526 Walden Avenue, Cheektowaga, or at the Matt Urban Hope Center.

The Walden Avenue Fantastic Sam's is Nichole's present employer and a sponsor of the free haircut events.

Volunteer @ the Wilson Street Urban Farm

This Saturday, like every second Saturday during the summer months, is volunteer day down on the Wilson Street Urban Farm in the Broadway-Fillmore neighborhood.

Mark and Janice Stevens have transformed this once vacant stretch of Wilson Street between Broadway and Sycamore into a urban agriculture success story.

In their second season of growing, the farm is starting to yield the fruits of their labor.

Every month they invite the community to come down and lend a hand.

If you are interested in volunteering, visit their website at http://wilsonstreeturbanfarm.wordpress.com/ or by joing their Facebook group.
