Lancaster and Depew high school students will compete next month for the title of “Winner off the Field” while helping their neighbors.

The fifth annual Rivalry Week Food Drive will kick off from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at Tops Markets in the D&L Plaza, 5175 Broadway, Depew. Two bins will be set up in front of the store, and shoppers may donate non-perishable items to the school they support.

The food drive began in 2007 as a way to harness the energy of Lancaster/Depew Week, the schools’ homecoming week that leads up to the annual varsity football game between the rivals. Students and teachers will participate this year by filling bins in designated areas of each school from Oct. 11 to 14. The school with the most donated food per student will be declared the “Winner off the Field.”

The community also may participate by dropping donations off at the Lancaster Youth Bureau, 200 Oxford Ave., by noon Friday, Oct. 14. Residents are asked to indicate toward which school they would like their donations to go.

Lancaster High School’s donations will be delivered to the Trinity Food Pantry, while Depew’s will be given to the Tri-Community Food Pantry.
