All Souls Day Commemoration - 10/31/2010

Please join us in praying for the souls of our dearly departed loved ones on Sunday, Oct. 31 in the age old Polish tradition of visiting the cemetery around All Souls Day.

In Poland, people travel from all over the country to visit the graves of their dearly departed. They place candles and flowers (usually mums) on graves of ancestors and friends, favorite teachers, etc.

Here are a video of how it's done there:

Public Invited to Meeting at Central Library: Create a New Vision for Libraries and Services

Re-Imagine! - The Buffalo & Erie County Public Library System

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The public is invited to share its ideas for the regional library system of the future through a series of public meetings, web surveys and focus groups; all part of the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library System's newly launched Re-Imagine campaign.

"This is an exciting as well as a challenging time for the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library System," said Bridget Quinn-Carey, director of the Library System.  "We are beginning a process to re-imagine the library and create a new vision that will meet the needs of the entire community; a library that will not only accommodate the types of  services that are so heavily used currently, but one that will satisfy the needs of our users for innovative services in the years ahead."

Katyn Film to Be Shown October 17

WNYers with Connections to Massacre to Speak

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The film's director, Andrzej Wajda, fulfilled his personal dream of telling the story of his father, who was among the thousands of Poles murdered in Katyn. Wajda chose Poland's best actors to tell the story.

The screening of the English-subtitled film coincides with the closing of the traveling exhibit entitled “Katyn. Massacre. Politics. Morality” on view at the library until the morning of Oct. 18.

A poignant local connection was discovered during the exhibit's presence in Buffalo. The photos of two Buffalo-born men are featured on a panel dedicated to U.S. born victims of the massacre. Those men were Reserve Lt. Henryk Franciszek Adamski and Sgt. Major Wincenty Blaszak. A copy of Adamski's baptismal certificate next to his photo lists him as living at 919 Clinton St. in Buffalo.
