Painting for Preservation Heads to Vaux Barn
Painting for Preservation Heads to Vaux Barn

Artists will be coming together June 5th, 9:30 am-12:30 pm to create at Vaux Barn, located at the corner of Genesee and Best on Mills Street.  Onlookers and artists are invited to join in another great art-making, preservation awareness event . This little gem, designed by Frederick Law Olmstead's partner Calvert Vaux, is thought to be a former stable that was attached to a large carriage house once located in MLK park.

Painting for Preservation (P4P) is an artists' movement designed to bring positive attention to distressed, historic locations and their communities.  The project brings together artists of all media (photography, painting, drawing, sculpture, writers, etc) and skill level (beginner to advanced)  to make individual, take-away, on-site artwork (we do NOT paint the building).  Not only does the project bring attention to the sites, it also serves to build a community of artists invested in the urban landscape, to create a dialogue with the community in which the structure is located, and to create a record of the location.

A selection of artwork from each Painting for Preservation location will be exhibited during the National Preservatin Trust Conference in October 2011.  Many of the sites visted by P4P are from Preservation Ready Sites (Facebook).  For more information about the project, please see http://paintingforpreservation.blogspot.com. Any questions, please e-mail me at sara@saramzak.com.
