Congressman Higgins’ Response to the State of the Union Address

“In today’s 2011 State of the Union Address President Obama outlined the United States’ game plan toward winning the future, and first up is job creation and economic growth.  Americans are justifiably impatient and we need to fuel that urgency with opportunities for success for our businesses, for our innovators and for our children.

“America can compete against any nation in the world when given the tools to do so. We should start by preparing our children for greatness with an unmatched quality education and preparing our businesses for prosperity by leveling the playing field impacted by China’s unfair economic policies and extending the Research and Development tax credits that feed the entrepreneurial hunger to develop cutting edge breakthroughs.

“Few issues are more unifying that the fight to cure cancer.   As we choose our national priorities carefully, medical research, which holds the dual promise of economic and scientific growth, should be a focal point in America’s rise to the top.

“After years of building in struggling and war torn nations around the world, I welcome the renewed focus on building right here in the United States, paving the way toward infrastructure investments that create jobs, support existing business and encourage continued growth and development.  As we look to build our roads we can also strengthen the neighborhoods around them by addressing vacant housing and other challenges impacting older, urban communities like Western New York as well as promoting private investment and job creation in struggling areas through extension of the Renewal Community program.

“Victory for the U.S. comes easier when we work together as a team.  Our biggest challenges as a nation don’t have a Democratic or Republican label, they are shared challenges and we have a shared responsibility to lead our Country to victory.  I look forward to working collaboratively to create substantial wins for Western New York and this nation.”
